Organized Space, Clearer Mind

January 25, 2019

Well, it's nearing the end of the first month of the year, have you stuck to your resolutions so far? Sometimes the idea of making goals and following through is easier said than done. After being inspired by Marie Kondō (some may recognize the name from the new Netflix series "Tidying Up with Marie Kondō"), we put together a post that will help you get organized for month number two of 2019! I know for me a clean and organized living space makes for a clearer mind, which means I can focus on those resolutions!

“Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest. By doing this, you can reset your life and embark on a new lifestyle.” - Marie Kondō

I think we can all relate to having a sentimental attachment to persons, places, or things, but if we're living in clutter, you have to ask yourself: what really sparks joy in your life? Sure your living space might not be as drastic as some of those Netflix episodes, but when you're surrounded by boxes and boxes of stuff it can feel very overwhelming!

Here is a little comic relief about "stuff" as told by comedian, George Carlin, to get you inspired! Trust me, it's a must watch!

- With all this new found inspiration, here are some tips and tricks to

creating an organized space and a clearer mind. -

This screenshot is straight from the source! Marie Kondō's website mentions her Six Basic Rules of Tidying.

One of the rules that really struck me was that you should tidy by category. This makes complete sense since then you know exactly how much of each category you have. If you have 3 bins worth of sheets then maybe that's a few bins too many? It really makes you evaluate which items spark that joy and which you could definitely part with. It's about putting the "why" to what you own, and knowning there's a value to everything you keep.

It's crazy how emotionally attached we can get to stuff, some reasoning for this attachment is more apparent than others such as it belonged to a special person in your life or it is associated with a specific memory. But what about the stuff that is just a place filler that accumulates into a pile? Our last blog post talked about staying on trend with the colour of the year, well maybe this colour could be incorporated into your organization too, like the bin or jars in Jillian Harris' photo above!

From a designer's point of view, you want to mix a functionality aspect with style for organizing each space in your home. Organization doesn't have to include plastic bins! Stylish items such as the baskets seen in the photo below can really add a great visual while being practical.

Here's some inspiration for each room in your home!
